Gouren :
Its origins go back to the Celtic group (Cornwall and Wales) migrations from Great Britain to Brittany, themselves mixed with groups originally from Ireland.
These migrations occur from the IVth to the VIIth century under pressure from the Germanics (Anglos and Saxons) who at the same time colonise the Breton islands.
Breton wrestling was a result of the intermingling of the wrestling of these groups of migrants with the wrestling of continental Brittany in the Middle Ages. This remains uncertain, in spite of the confirmed persistence of the Celtic wrestling close to that of the Breton wrestling, in Ireland, Wales and British Cornwall, which reinforces this hypotheses. Only very recently (end of XIXth century?) did Ireland loose the practice of its wrestling (Collar and Elbow), which is still practiced in the USA, imported by Irish settlers.
