Saunders Lewis (full name John Saunders Lewis), born on 15th October 1893 and deceased on 1st September 1985, was Welsh nationalist and one of the founders of Plaid Cymru Genedlaethol (Welsh Nationalist Party), known later as Plaid Cymru. He was a poet, dramatist, historian, literary critic and politician. Lewis is generally recognised as one the most important figures of XXth century Welsh literature. Lewis was nominated for the Nobel prize for literature in 1970.
